This is the information I have so far on the first Korean-American Horseback Archery Competition.

This event will be a friendly competition between the best mounted archers in Korea, and the USA. We will be limiting the USA competitors to about 10. For the USA team, the first 10 people to say they are coming will get the spot. The Korean team will be bringing about 7 competitors. This event will be run by the WHAF and UNESCO, and Hosted by the MA3 members Holm Neumann and Katie Stearns, and hopefully more.

We need as much help as possible, as it is just Holm and I supporting the event. If you have something you feel you can contribute, please let us know! We are in the process of looking for sponsors to help cover some of the costs of things listed below. It has been a long time wish of Holm Neumann that our Korean friends could come to the USA and experience the beauty of Central Oregon. They have been the most gracious hosts year after year when we traveled to Korea for their International Horseback Archery Competitions. Holm and I want to show them the same hospitality, and make this an unforgettable event for them.

The Competition will have an Indian-Cowboy theme, since this is the time frame when horseback archery was traditionally practiced in America. The competition will be spread over two days, to make sure that the horses do not get too tired and over worked.

The competition is planned for the first weekend in Oct, in 2010; so preferably on the weekend of the 1st-3rd.

Things I am working on getting done right now:

• Need to design a poster for the competition. The poster will be Native American themed. I am hoping to get some pictures of Pat because when he does mounted archery demos, he is in Native American costume. If anyone has nice pictures of people practicing mounted archery in Native American costume, please email them to me.
• Making formal invitation and advertisement on the MA3 website, and my website, Facebook, etc..

Ideas for gifts and prizes:

• T-shirts with competition theme design
• Cowboy hats and bandannas
• Cowboy belt buckles
• Things like arrowhead necklaces, or local jewelry, etc, for all participants

Entertainment for competitors that wish to stay before and/or after the competition:

• Scenic trail riding – with Holm, Susan, and Katie
• Cross Country trail riding – with Katie
• Cattle working – with Clint Surplus and Bob Story.
• Cowboy gun shooting – with Holm
• Medieval Sword fighting – with Katie and friends.
• Fencing – with Holm
• Hiking at the Smith Rocks
• Visit the lava caves.
• Rose City Archery tour.

Fees that we will need to have:

• Competition entrance fee
• Admission/spectators – maybe a couple bucks per person to help cover costs of bleachers, porta-potties, etc. Anyone helping with the event will not be charged, and will most likely be getting lots of free food for lunch and snacks etc.
• Vendor fees- if people want to sell food and/or goods.

Equipment needed:

• Archery targets
• Target faces
• Spears and spear targets
• Speaker system with mic – Jet might be able to provide this
• Bleachers
• Portable-potties
• Tipis/tents/yurts – for visiting competitors. Accommodation is limited to my house, Holm’s house, and friends and neighbors homes. Some people may have to camp for the weekend.
• Scoring board

People needed:

• Scorers
• Timers
• Photographers +filming
• Arrow collectors
• Helping Hands
• Parking director
• Ticket keepers
• Horseback Archery marshals – people who are not competing that are educated in horse safety and are willing to direct horse traffic. I am hoping I can get some of my friends who are SCA equestrian Marshals to help with this.
• Korean translator would be great. I am learning Korean, and will do as much translating as I can. But if anyone is fluent in Korean and wants to come hang out with us for the weekend that would be super.

Horses we have so far: Tasha, Jebe, Arete, Anawyn, Zumbido, Carmina, Pele, Peaches, Lexi, Casablanca, Tanner, Cobre, Quevedo, Silver, Emmy, Magic, Outlaw, Ghost, 4 horses coming with Pat, 2 horses coming with Darren,

MA3 Competitors:
Dana, Lukas, Pat, David Grey, Dave B, Doug, Di, Darren, Holm, and myself from the USA. From Canada, Barb. From Brazil, Satchy, and maybe Masai.

I know that many of my SCA friend’s horses have done mounted archery, or would not be bothered by it. So I hoping I can borrow a few horses from them. Also, many competitors from the USA have already trained horses and may bring them. I do not think horses will be a problem, but I will not know for sure until we get closer to the event.
